An immigrant from Mexico City, Mexico, Marta’s family moved to Orlando, Florida when she was in the third grade. Seeking better educational opportunities and a safer environment for his two daughters, Marta’s father left his job as a university professor to work for his brother’s store in Central Florida. Marta is proud of her family heritage and her father’s decision, despite that it has caused her to experience discrimination in the United States. In school she is quiet and withdrawn. Although she does her work accurately, her teachers note that she spends copious amounts of time on written assignments, often erasing and rewriting multiple times. She shies away from answering questions in class and dislikes group work. If she does find herself in a group, she does not interact much with her peers, but rather discovers what her job will be and singularly concentrates on it, leading to the exclusion of her group members. While she was quick to learn English and can hold conversations, she speaks deliberately and slowly, often with a vocabulary beyond the scope of an average fifth grader. Her speed of speech coupled with her reluctance to participate in class discussions are commonly mistaken for lack of ability, causing Marta to get overlooked in the classroom. Her more observant teachers note that she is a voracious reader and writer yet are concerned about her introverted nature. Engaging Marta in discussion is no easy task, and requires understanding, persistence, and genuine interest. She can often be seen staring out the classroom window, wholly engrossed in what is happening outside as opposed to the conversation within the room. Outside of school, Marta is enrolled in advanced art classes, working on writing her own novel, and helps her family in the store.
