ACCELERATION

Definition NAGC - "A strategy of progressing through education at rates faster or ages younger than the norm.”

ACCEL Mandate: Florida Statute 1002.3105- Academically Challenging Curriculum to Enhance Learning

1. Options

  • Whole-Grade or Mid-Year Promotion

  • Subject Matter Acceleration

  • Virtual Instruction in Higher Grade Level

  • Credit Acceleration Program

  • Other options - curriculum compacting, telescoping curriculum, internships, STEM enrichment, flexible grouping, self-paced instruction, advanced courses, combined courses, enrichment courses

4. ACCEL Requirements

  • Principals

    • MUST inform parents of options and requirements available

    • Provide a process for parents to request acceleration option and allow student to participate if they meet eligibility

  • ​District 

    • Must inform parents of options and provide a process for parents to request acceleration​districtIf acceleration would result in moving to a new school,

  • If parent-request, a performance contract should be used

    • Student attendance requirements​

    • Student conduct requirements

    • Other requirements like competitions, field trips, or extracurricular activities

2. Eligibility Requirements

  • Principal Determined

    • Responsible for determining eligibility requirements for midyear promotion, whole-grade promotion, higher level virtual courses, and subject matter acceleration when the student will remain in the same school

  • District Determined

    • Responsible for any acceleration eligibility requirements that would result in a student attending a new school​

3. Eligibility Considerations

  • Standardized assessment scores

  • GPA

  • Attendance and conduct records

  • Teacher recommendations

  • School counselor recommendation
